Fall Ramblings

Things are still so green...

Things are still so green…

As I walked around the garden today
a thought occurred to me this way
Texas Fall is very much the same
as Texas Spring in so many ways.
Things are green and everywhere you look
are flowers of many kinds with some
that only flower in the Fall
as other do only in the Spring

The start of Spring is cool and mild
which stays this way for a couple of weeks
but it quickly warms up fast
as temperatures begin to peek
heading towards a hundred degrees
as Summer takes over from the Spring

Fall goes the opposite way
with a slow and general drop
from a hundred degrees to cool at night
as the temperature declines
until a jacket or some other warm clothes
are needed to keep off the chill.

Texas Springs are very short
lasting no more than two or three weeks
and you know when Summer is here
as temperatures are on an upward climb

Texas Fall longer does last
sometimes for a couple of months
enough to fool the plants that are green
until the first frost comes along
and wipes them all out one by one

With a very short Winter
and usually not hard
a frost or two and maybe some snow
that looks pretty until it disappears
and then the process begins
all over as the temperature starts to climb
and Spring is on us just once more.

The first buds start to break out
and plants shoot up from the ground
and some may surprise us in a nice way
as we thought they no longer had life
but left them in just in case
hoping they would grow another day.

Of all of the seasons that Nature provides
Texas Fall is my favorite by far
Things are still green and color abounds
with flowers everywhere and leaves turning brown
and temperatures in a downward climb
to where a jacket at night keeps me warm
but during the day the sun is still hot
enough that shorts and tee shirts are fine.

Cold Weather

Frost bitten Geraniums

Frost bitten Geraniums

My garden is a bloody mess
with Jack Frost finally doing its thing
where there was a lot of green
all has a nasty dead coloring.

Nearly all the plants the frost has dried
freezing the moisture from the inside
the end result is a burnt brown look
that will require that I cut
everything back to the roots.

As the weather is still very cold
the cutting back can keep until
some comfort can be found
as the temperature rises from the ground
and warmer weather comes around.

I love my garden I have to say
and I don’t mind the fact that it is hard work
but I certainly want some warmth at least
if I am to go and tame the beast.

We do seem to be having a much colder time
than we normally get this time of year
generally, it is not till next month
that freezing weather arrives here.

Global warming must be the cause
at least that’s what the experts will say
Me, all I know is that it is cold
and I want it to go away.

Snow in New York State

Snow in New York State

I lived ten years in New York State
where winter lasts six months of the year
and six feet of accumulated snow I fear
is not uncommon when you wake

The coldest temperature I was in
was on a ski slope one evening
with the windchill it was down
to minus 52 below freezing

I took off my ski’s and walked back down
the mountain side on the same trail
I should have skied if it was not so cold
and instead headed in to the bar and to get warm.

Another time, I had a car freeze up
as the temperature was minus 23
and the only way to get it to start
was bring it inside and let it thaw.

I moved out of New York after ten years of hell
as far south as I could thinking that well
the snow only last’s one day at a time
and cold and frost was not really that much
and compared to New York, a walk in the park.

New Yorker‘s are a hardy bunch
they take this weather in their stride
they put on snow tires and winterize their cars
wear snow boots and long-johns to keep warm
they ride snow mobiles and skiing go
out in the cold and in the snow

Texas Summer

Texas Summer

I was so glad to leave that behind
and move to the warmth of the Texas sun
the summer times I can stand
when the temperatures climb to a hundred and one
sometimes even a little more
but I do not find that a chore
as shorts and tee shirts and sandles too
are all I need to keep me cool.

Say Hello as you pass by.

Texas folks are a friendly lot
probably because it’s so durn hot
as Texans greet each other they say
“Hi, how are you today?
Looks like another scorcher” they say
“I wonder if rain is on the way?”

One hundred degrees is nothing new
and higher than that it can go
for days on end it goes on and on
and rain is nowhere to be found
things dry up and wither and die
as the blistering sun up in the sky
beats down with an endless supply of heat
and still the Texans to each other greet
with a smile and the wink of an eye
say “Hello” as they pass by.

It has to be said they do not change
even if it’s pouring rain
as at that time so pleased are they
as rain does not often come their way.
Generally, when it does come
no light showers spread over time
nothing so simple as gentle rain
but instead it pours in almighty amounts
enough at a time a job to count
gully washers and inches at a time
for that is the nature of this State
and why Texans are a hardy bunch
it’s either feast or famine,no light lunch
we get it all or nothing as that is the way
and we still say “Hello” as we pass by each day.

Texas does not have seasons as such
instead of four there are only two
it’s either Summer for ten months of the year
shared with Winter which has so few
that it hardly counts except
in that time  the weather can change
instead of it being one hundred degrees
it can be cold enough for it to freeze.
Even with frosty breath as they speak
“Good Morning” they say as they peek
out from under fur hoods and hats
as cold weather has changed their clothes
as bundled up on their way they go.

Texas winter it has to be said generally lasts a couple of days
of really cold weather and sometimes some snow
to make children’s eyes all aglow
As they play in the snow and angels do make
or a snowman if enough of the white stuff has fallen.
This does not stop the friendly folk as they pass each other
in the street, as with a smile, a nod of the head or a cheery “Hello”
it has to be said that Texans are the nicest people.

In the morning everything has all gone
and the temperature rises in little degrees
and bit by bit and day by day
Winter is fast slipping away
and then all of a sudden Summer is here
Frosts are all gone and with it the rain
the temperature goes up before we know where we are
back to one hundred degrees is the norm
as another three season just true to form
have slipped on by and it’s Summer again.

Still the Texans to each other greet
with a smile and the wink of an eye
say “Hello” as they pass by.
