Life and Day to Day things by a Pond Lover

Retired from the University of Texas and too old to play soccer anymore. Now, in the twilight of his years, time is spent writing in this blog, hiking and exploring Texas Parks, photography, working out, gardening and tending to the five ponds he built .

The Austin Pond Society held their February Meeting on Monday 17th at the Zilker Botanical Gardens Meeting Room.

As per usual, we started with dinner put on by our fabulous chef, Sonja. This week we dined on Romantic Spaghetti and Meatballs with Classic Caesar Salad and Garlic Bread. (Sorry folks, it did not include that glass of wine!) As usual, it was wonderful and spaghetti is my most favorite of all foods anyway so I was in hog heaven to the extent that I had to rush setting up for the main topic. I will make sure that I set up first and eat later in the future. Not sure why it was called Romantic Spaghetti, maybe because it was served just after Valentines day or maybe because I LOVE spaghetti.

About 45 members showed up to listen to Matt Boring Of Texas Landscapes.  He spoke on “Building a Beautiful Waterfall”. He had a great slide show but unfortunately due to a combination of technical problems and human error, The video that I made did not come out to where I can show it. I was able to video the last portion of his discussion with the Q&A session and it was pretty informative.

His was a very interesting slide show and covered all sizes of projects that his company had worked on. He also covered the extensive work that he had done on rebuilding and repairing work by other contractors. As with all types of business, there are good contractors and then there are the rest and he encouraged anyone who is thinking of hiring a contractor to build a water feature, to check them out very thoroughly as there are a lot of fly-by-night outfits out there. You may end up paying a bit more but essential, you get what you pay for.

Following Matt’s presentation, Jeannie led the group through the business session which went pretty smoothly. One item was the election of Betty Blackson as our new Librarian. She was elected on a voice vote so now the APS Board has a full complement of Officers. Thanks to all of the wonderful members for stepping up to the plate and I am quite sure that this will be another great year for the Austin Pond Society.

Next meeting will be on the third Monday of the month which this time around is March 17. Hope to see you all at 6:30 pm at the Zilker Botanical Gardens. Just as a FYI, daylight saving time begins on Sunday, March 9 at 2:00 am. Don’t forget to change your clocks and set them forward one hour. Spring forward and Fall back…
