The March meeting of the Austin Pond Society was held at the usual time and place, Zilker Botanical Gardens starting at 6:30 PM and was attended by more than 50 people. We started with our usual repast of delicious food provided by Chef Sonja and as it was St Patrick’s Day, she opted for Irish Baked Potatoes with salad followed by cookies for desert. As usual, the food was just great. Maybe it’s because I don’t have to cook it myself but it always seems to taste soooo good.
Following the meal, the speaker for the evening was Shane Stefek, Owner of the Water Garden Gems in San Antonio. His topic was titled Pond Esthetics-Create your own oasis. He covered just about every function of water gardening both from a structural and the care and maintenance of a pond. He created much interest as he spoke and Jeannie, our President had to step in to get the questions saved for the end otherwise he would never have got through his presentation.
When he did open up the Q and A session, the questions (and answers) were coming so thick and fast that she eventually had to step in again to finally allow Shane to close his discussion. He is a great presenter and very knowledgeable about the subject and his down to earth approach is what generated so many questions. All in all, a very good presentation.

Following Shane, Jeannie led us through some small business items and with the drawing of the door prizes, the meeting was adjourned at least for some of us. Shane and his wife were surrounded by members buying much of the pond treatment items and bombarding him with more questions. They were still going at it when I left…
